I recently had the opportunity to volunteer for Let There Be Mom
, a non-profit organization created to help moms when they, or their child's father, are diagnosed with a life threatening illness by preserving the legacy of the ailing parent. The organization was created to assist moms in preserving the traditions their families have started, the memories they have made and the hopes and dreams they have for their children. -lettherebemom.org.
I had not met Dale McDaris nor his family before that day, but I will never forget them. What an incredible honor it was to be able to document for them their last memories together. I photographed Grayson, 4, and Tinsley, 2, as they held their father's hands and sat with him in his bed. I photographed Dale's parents as they held his hands and kissed him gently on his forehead, and I photographed Dale and his wife, Whitney, as they shared tinder moments together. Words cannot express what it meant to be able to see this family's love for each other and experience their incredible strength in the face of unimaginable loss. Dale McDaris passed away the night after the photographs with his family were taken.
